Installation
Maverick Meerkat (10.10)
gm-notify finally made it into the universe repository. So all you have to do is installing the gm-notify package either via Synaptic or with the command line:
sudo apt-get install gm-notify
done
Lucid Lynx (10.04 LTS)
Lucid is Ubuntu’s Long Term Support version and also has a working version of gm-notify, although this won’t be supported with new features.
To install this you have to add the PPA and install the gm-notify package out of it. Here are some step-by-step instructions:
First, make sure you are running a Ubuntu Lucid (10.04). Karmic might work, too – but I won’t promise that. Now, you have to add the PPA to your software sources. Do this by typing
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gm-notify-maintainers/ppa sudo apt-get update
into a terminal and you’re almost ready. Finally, you have to install the gm-notify package either via Synaptic or again with the command line:
sudo apt-get install gm-notify
done
Usage
Click on the Indicator Applet next to the clock and select Google Mail.
The configuration dialog will appear where you have to enter your credentials. Please make sure that you use your full Gmail / Google Talk address including @googlemail.com or whatever. Now click Apply and Close. Everything is up and running as you can confirm in the Applet. Have fun
Configuration
Normally, it will open the configuration interface when you first use this program. But if you already had a gm-notify instance installed and you need to change the credentials or you want to reconfigure it for some other reason, you’ll find the configuration interface at System->Settings->GMail Notifier Configuration.
Troubleshooting
If the config utility won’t accept your credentials please make sure you entered your whole address and that Google Talk is enabled for your account!

many thanks! working greatly on ubuntu lts. by the way, is it possible to make it work on mint linux too?
kudos
Great Application! Keep up the good work.
may i suggest something else? it would be great if it would not check emails directly after bootup, but wait for 30secs or s/th. the way it is currently done it requests my gmail-pass from the keyring before i unlocked it. as my wifi-password is also requested at bootup, there are two requests to unlock the keyring.
thanks!
great! love it. though i’d like to know whether there is an option to disable the notification popups. i’d love to just have the icon change for me to see that there are new emails. i don’t need a popup to distract me from what i’m doing.
and yes, i have a mild form of ADD. i’d really appreciate it.
This is a wonderful application, should be included in ubuntu next release.
This little app is great!
Can you provide instructions on how to change the app’s icon in the messaging menu?
I’ve seen screenshots of it using the actual gmail logo.
Brilliant app.
May I suggest a feature?
If a new message arrives and I click on it, then it opens my Gmail inbox, which is great. HOWEVER, if my Gmail inbox is already open, then it opens a 2nd instance of my Gmail inbox.
Is there a way to stop it from opening a 2nd instance of my Gmail inbox?
how often does it check the mail ?
it’s getting push notifications for the inbox – so no check interval. If you have additional labels, it will check them once a minute.
thanks
Any way to get message previews in the Messaging menu AS WELL AS in the libnotify popup?
unfortunately not possible by design of the indicator menu
Very nice thanks! I have one small problems: My labels are like Personal/Blog , with a / in it, and they don’t show up in the indicator even if they have unread mail.
many thnx for this,
works as expected.
just one little thing can you change the interval for checking new messages?
Does gm-notify utilise SSL encryption when connecting to gmail?
it uses TLS for the connection
I cannot get any of my labels to show up in the indicator. They are separated by commas, I have tried putting them in quotes, but nothing seems to work
labels generally don’t show up if there are no new mails inside them. Just seperate the label names with commas (no quotes) – it should work as expected as soon as some mail arrives…
Say, what is that applet to the left of volume control? It looks like an elegant network monitor applet.
this is the default network manager of ubuntu ^.-
Very Cool, Thanks!
Can this be made to work with multiple Google Apps email accounts?
thanks,
-avi
After I installed this, it somehow automatically found my username and password. Problem is that it only found the username, not the @gmail.com, meaning that whenever I click on the icon I get an error. What’s worse is that the configuration screen won’t let me edit anything as the ‘Apply’ button is greyed out.
Any ideas?
have you tried to reenter your credentials in the settings dialog – because the apply button only works if you entered working account data.
If this doesn’t help try to delete the existing password with your keyring manager (seahorse). Delete the entry called GMail.
Brilliant. Love this. Thank you.
Thanks much, good stuff.
Great work. But how do I uninstall it?
via synpatic: Just check gm-notify for uninstall
Works awesomely, many thanks for Brighton England.
I do have one question, in your ‘usage’ screenshot above it doesn’t show the mail, compose new mssg, and contacts links I see when I click it – how do I get rid of them?
Using ubuntu netbook.
Cheers!
Hi
the dirty hack is to remove the file /usr/share/indicators/messages/applications/evolution – if you want it back just recreate this file and put the following content into it:
/usr/share/applications/evolution.desktop
This is the elegant way :

Thanks a lot, it works nicely.
Useful tip for the Netbook Edition users: the Gmail icon did not appear automatically, I actually had to go to the System „tab“ to open Gmail Notifier Config to get it going.
I did the installation.
When i select google mail in the indicator nothing happens.
When i select system-preferences-gmail notifier configuration nothing happens.
could you please file a bug report at launchpad? Please include the output when you start gm-notify.py or gm-notify-config.py from a terminal
Great job! I wish some features — archive, delete, report spam, mark as read, quick read, quick reply — would be incorporated though. This would make it just perfect and I would definitely use only this notifier. In the mean time, I still use checkgmail too.
This is awesome. I wanted an app that used Ubuntu’s default mail icon and you’ve made it perfectly. 10/10.
Hi, great work, thank you, would it be possible to integrate the original google mail icon?
please have a look at https://bugs.launchpad.net/gm-notify/+bug/569719 – I removed it in the last version because the default icon fits better in different themes…
Alex, is it possible to have the gmail icon for your notifier and the default mail icon for evolution at the same time in the messaging menu?
if so, how can this be achieved?
well, you can if you exchange the icon for gm-notify. I used the default mail icon because the gmail icon didn’t fit into the desktop Look & Feel of many users
Great! can you provide me with step by step instructions or a link on how exactly I can change the icon? Many thx!
Great work! The only thing I’m looking forward are multiple accounts
https://bugs.launchpad.net/gm-notify/+bug/373231
Yes, the Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook edition has the mail icon next to the clock. I did a clean install on my Dell Latitude 2100 (previously it had Ubuntu 9.04 installed by Dell).
Its nicely done and would be useful for anyone who wants to use the integrated indicator applet without using evolution. You should see if you can get it into the main repositories.
This would be great as there are potentially more googlemail webinterface users than there are evolution users at all.
BTW, very nice work. I prefer a clean desktop and using the standard indicator applet was one of this things I really wanted to have.
I don’t think the Netbook Edition has this mail icon in the notification area. At least I don’t see it, but that might as well be because I upgraded instead of reinstalling.
Any way of getting this icon to show up, or any way of just haeing the same functions under the menu where your name appears?
To get the same behaviour as after reinstall, you have to clean your home directoy or create a new user profile.
But I don’t know the problems of the netbook edition, because I prefer the normal one on my netbook too.
try to make a right click an your panel, click „Add to panel“ and choose the Indicator Applet…
Thank you!
You freed me from the hell of buggy evolution-notifiers and the ugly mail-notification/gmail-notification.
Yours is great!
Very nice work. It would be amazing if there were „archieve“ and „report as spam“ buttons in the notification.
unfortunately this is not possible due to the limitations of the ubuntu notification system. How to click a butten that disappears when the mouse hovers over?
dankeschoen!!!
Excellent! I didn’t know about this software — found it on Google when searching to see how I could put Gmail in Lucid’s new Indicator Applet. Works like a charm! Many thanks from user in Scotland
Wow. I’m very glad to have this new version working great in lucid.
NICE JOB!
Thanks for this^^
