It has been a while, but recently I have been playing around with my windows install once again (after almost 1.5 years of happy coexistance). The decision to redo windows was made after I acquired a Win 7 Ultimate key. I am hoping to resolve some speed issues with certain games, finally make my wifi USB stick work and so on.
So after inserting the disc and booting from it, I was not really expecting any problems, since it was a straight forward thing: kill the old partition – reformat – install. Or so I thought. Turns out, the Win 7 installer is to limited to give me any options on how to format a partition, or tell me that I should actually use two partitions as best practice. Yes, indeed, Microsoft now wants to have a 100-200 MB Partition for whatever sort of recovery shit. On top of that, Win 7 has issues when multiple HDDs are used with multiple partitions. Even the BIOS boot order AND/OR the SATA port to which the drives are connected can make installation impossible.
Here is my solution. I booted into a real OS (Ubuntu), opened GParted and used some unallocated space to make a 200MB recovery partition plus a some 200GB main install partition. Booted of the Win 7 disc and voila – it works. Dunno why, before the installer would just tell me it hadn’t found a „system partition“ – whatever that may be. So no the installer is happily humming away and I enjoy staring at the somewhat lame percentage figure that slowly approaches 100% – previous Windows installers had cool graphics and time estimates that never were accuracte – could be called a regression I think?

After having written and parsed several CSV files with addresses for various marketing projects, folks in our development team have become extremely agitated as to why nobody makes use of our existing SugarCRM and vTiger instances. We were trying to import our data into vTiger recently – needless to say we didn’t succeed. The answers we got as to why nobody was using CRM systems was unanimous: They are to difficult to use. So we came up with some ideas on how it could be done better and swiftly drafted a blueprint for „our“ ideal CRM system. We call it Lounge Relationship Management – we dropped the „C“ to set our concept apart and convey the feeling that it is a lighter and more universal approach. Lounge, like it’s database backend CouchDB is an acronym: Lightweight Operative Usable No-SQL Great Efficiency – Relationship Management. There.

What lounge does…

Contact Management: whose employee was Mr. Smithers, and does he work in corrections?

Project Supervision: who send what when to whom, and did we get a response?

Action Tracking: Did Lisa call Mr. Burns and verify that meeting date?

Based on a simple yet extensible backend, LoungeRM can adapt easily to your requirements. Need a field for numbers of children? Simply add it to the contact. Not happy with the fields provided for actions? Just rename them.

… and what it doesn’t.
LoungeRM is an attempt to provide an easy, quick and light solution in a market full of highly inflated tools – our favourite antagonist is SugarCRM. We do not want to build a „customer relations invoice project management employee accounting solutions provider“ thing. That’s why we call it „RM“ only. It is not necessarily for customers, you could use it to track pets or employees or the status of tools, computers, planes, rental equipment, anything really that can be represented by our data model. Taking the perception that existing tools are to inflated and have to much overhead for the average user, we focus on an easy-to-use interface which can be handled while on the phone, in a meeting or on a mobile device without having to spend hours on writing one report. The time used to document an action should not be longer than the process itself.

We will shortly provide some first screenshots,

Another post in English for I feel this needs to be international.

First I need to tell you, we had great weather in Germany recently, so naturally we are all pumped by the first real week of spring weather – personally I get that funny smell of sun and fresh air, the need to be outside, the desire for every ray of sun. Now: today the new edition of Time Magazine arrived, as always on thursdays. And as always, the most interesting question is: What have they put on the cover this time. The fancy robot like thing from a couple of weeks back was cool. Today it was not cool by a thousand miles, it was actually shocking, desperate and was pushing all my buttons for feeling pain, hope- and helplessness and the urge to do something about it. Take a look: HERE! .

Only rarely has a single picture moved me quite like this one has. The next thing I did after flipping a few pages was go to some Red Cross website and donate my share to rebuild Japan. This is a first for me, and I attribute it to Time’s cover. It drives home the pain of so many in Japan, the last number I heard was 9k people dead, and sadly, this is a running count.

Now, call me a hypocrite, Haiti must have been about as bad. Africa suffers even without earthquakes. But this is quite a picture. Please comment and share your opinion.

Now a more joyful topic for a change, man needs contrasts and has to compensate things. Here’s my way of doing this: Rock’n'Roll music. This is a product of the past few days watching tutorials and experimenting a bit. A few words on technique:

Any lick can be played in any key, naturally, but I would advise an easy C-F-G progression or any derivative of it, since only in C can you really use glissandos.

The minor thirds in some lick that are played briefly before the propper third for a major chord have to be struck lightly with the third finger. Try aiming for the little rounded corner of the black key and let the finger slide down on, in C maj., E. Do not pull the minor third from way up on the black key – not fast enough.

The glissando up is best executed with the nails of the 2nd and 3rd finger. Down you can use the nail of your thumb. Try an almost 90° angle vertically between key and nail. Try not to use your skin – that hurts.

Enjoy and comment on that too, if you want to tell me off or compliment or anything;).

Since a friend of me and I made plans to start (or join) a band, I started amassing equipment needed for such an enterprise. Here’s a brief list of what I have so far:

Roland FP-4 – stage piano

Behringer Xenyx 1202 – 12 band mixer

Fame MS-58 – low-cost offshoot of the famous SURE SM-58

Yamaha PianoCraft 400 – PA, Studiomonitor, general purpose HiFi Syste

Behringer RAGE 158 – Guitar Amp

Behringer Tube Amp Modeller

SONY closed Headphones – multi-purpose monitor or whatever I need to hear

E-Guitar, no name, strat form

plenty of cables, inserter cables for PC, mono and stereo jack cables, XLR for the mic and so on

So thats not really a lot of hi-spec equipment I have lying around here, but it is quite sufficient for the first humble attempts of getting something recorded. Keep in mind, that this stuff is also supposed to serve as on-stage live equipment, if we ever reach that stage.

Over the last couple of days, I started doing some work on a famous Cologne Karneval song called „Hey Kölle“ – German readers might know it. I figured it was easy enough to not make me want to throw the stuff out of the window, but challenging enough for my meager skills at recording.

I started out by doing what was easiest for me – the piano part. That was done rather quickly in 2 hours using three separat tracks for the various parts that interlink. I did some copy and paste for the chorus and had that gave me some acceptable results. Then i started practicing the guitar part – a challenge considering my close to non-existent guitar skills. I managed to arrange some powerchords for the whole thing, but left it at that – the recording was for another day.

For this morning, to be precise. So i revved up the amp, used my amp modeler to produce the sound I wanted and went to work. A few notes on that modeler: The Behringer Rage 158 does reasonably well as an amp, but its built in overdrive is – simply put – unusable. So I use the modeler to do all the overdrive, gain control and so forth. By mid-day, i had the rythm guitar recorded – not mixed yet, it basically kills the effect of the much nicer played piano – I still have to figure out how to make it sound good together.

Forgot to say, I did the drums with a Linux drum engine called Hydrogen. That was rather easy once I figured out what I wanted for drum patterns. That took me about one afternoon. So from the beginning, I recorded the other instruments along the drums, so that I kept the beat rather well – which is not usually one of my strengths.

This afternoon, the base line was due. Whith the nice Roland base guitar preset, I was now left at improvising for an instrument I had never played nor ever investigated any further. Suffice it to say, I am not yet happy with the outcome.

So by the end of this day, I now have drums, piano, rythm guitar and base line in the DAW programm (Ardour – quite nice linux software). The daunting task will be mixing and a lead guitar.

Modifizierte Taunts: 1-3; 7; 10; 20; 25-29.

Have fun.

Good morning ladies and gentlemen,

I finally found a workaround for the bug which raised the CPU-usage of gm-notify to 100% when using it on Maverick. Now it’s working flawless, so start having fun with it ! Other changes are:

It’s opening the correct inbox according to your settings in Google Mail

Bulgarian translation included

when using mutt as client, the labels will be opened correctly

One great improvement on Maverick is, that gm-notify made it into the universe repository (thank you, Andrew Starr-Bochicchio). So if you can’t guess how to install it now, updated instructions are on the gm-notify page.

Thanks to all bug reporters and contributers for their work, and all users for their patience!

We love users. They make us all smiles and cheers if they like our program or product. They endorse our project and maybe even contribute to it. They cherish our work and make us feel needed and our work worthwhile. Without them, developing wouldn’t be half the fun.
Yet, we hate them. Users are often stupid, insight-less, negligent, annoying bastards. They make our days horrible by forcing us to build in yet another input check. They make us stretch to ever more high-flying solutions to fulfill their needs, even though we might have seen enough of the framework by the time the alpha was released.
This paradox remains unsolved and riddled in the brains of many a programmer (or developer of anything for that matter). This will be an attempt at trying to understand, why it is exactly that users have this very unique feel about them.
The loving, endorsing user gives us a homey feeling because we have a task to live up to – make that person happy. Help him get along. Helping is nice. Being nice is… well nice, I guess. And while being nice and all, we might find that wicked cool workaround for a tricky programming question that really challenges our minds in the kind of way that makes you want to work all day on it. This type of user might even be the reason we are doing the work we do. They may have brought our minds to the problem they are facing – one that we share but never noticed. Thereby, they support our creativity and imagination, make us innovative thinkers.
The opposite is the evil, mean-faced user writing nasty mails that my first ever alpha 1 was buggy and it’d need 1000 more features to be usable. In giving us the scope of what may lie ahead of us in order live up to our own goals (after all, we want to bring it to a good release!), they make us feel small, incapable and overworked. Seeing you still have to write 100000 lines of code is not exactly a pleasant experience. In trying to fulfill a thank-less user’s feature request, we might reach a boundary which is not easily crossable – in our heads or in our programming capabilities. The framework may run out of solutions, or those left might be so ugly and lengthy we are scared to try them. This is the horrid, negative user, that makes us want to delete the project irreversibly from our HDD.

Without a user, our life were meaningless, with one it can be ever so much harder. Feel it yourself? Comment pls.

here we come to release 0.10.2 after 0.10.1 was available but never really announced because the new features didn’t work very well. So this is more or less a bugfix release with some polished features from 0.10.1 which include:

Configurable autorun

Usage of the default mail icon

It’s possible to ignore the inbox

ok – Ladies and Gentlemen, to be true, I’m kind of proud to finally present the new version of gm-notify – and it’s the first which simple works great (at least for me ).

So, here comes the interesting part – new features:

Google Talk Backend: What does that mean? To cut it short -> Instant/Push-like mail notification

Lucid Lynx Support: Complete integration with new indicator-applet features

Hide Labels with a count of zero to keep it all tidy

moreover it fixes about 30 Bugs

Have a look at the new gm-notify page on this blog for installation instructions. I hope you have fun with this
